Letter from the Herbalist

Spring is here.  At least it's sporadically here.  One week we had 12 inches of snow.  The next week we're coatless.

We sit at two farmers' markets each week.  My part is herbs.  My partner deals in crystals.  We were hesitate when we started, especially with the crystals, but sales and talking with customers has led us to the conclusion that people are not well and are willing to try anything to get relief.

The problem is people don't want to give up their lifestyle no matter what pain it's causing them.  I get at least 10 people each week that are filled with questions about herbs and what they can do for them.  They're really excited when you  talk about things you've seen, but when you mention giving up certain foods or smoking (though that is much easier now even in an area that grows a lot of tobacco) they just can't.  "Isn't there something easier they can do?"

And I don't act holier than them because I know how the cravings are.  But few walk without support.  And everyone is walking around with bakery treats or ice cream.  And it's so easy to use the excuse that we're older, it's vain, etc.

There's so much that I want say....that I would love to shake them and scream "do you know what you're doing to yourself?" but you can't (my retired attorney partner says).  Just bite your tongue and smile.
